The update adds new AI-powered features, including a distraction removal option in the Remove tool to identify and remove background objects from images automatically.

In addition, two generative AI features, Generate Background and Generate Similar, have moved out of beta, and into the stable version of the software.

Artists working in VFX, animation and motion graphics pipelines get native support for OpenColorIO and ACES color management, and better support for 32-bit HDR images.

Photoshop on the web has also been updated, with a new AI object selection system.

New automatic distraction removal option in the Remove tool
Photoshop 26.0 features a further update to the AI-powered Remove tool introduced in Photoshop 24.5.

In addition, it is now possible to choose whether to use generative AI to create the replacement background, via a new Mode dropdown menu.

Firefly-based Generative AI and Generative Background features move out of beta
Photoshop 26.0 also sees two new generative AI features move out of beta, and into the stable release.

Generate Background automatically detects and replaces the background of the image, with users able to guide the output by entering a brief text description.

Photoshop automatically matches the new background to the lighting and perspective of the foreground objects.

Generate Similar, available as an option within several of the generative AI tools – including Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generate Image, and Generate Background itself – automatically generates variations of a source image.

We covered them both when they were originally released in beta earlier this year, so check out our original story for more details.

Native support for OpenColorIO and better support for 32-bit HDR images
For artists using Photoshop as part of visual effects, motion graphics or animation workflows, another significant change in Photoshop 26.0 is support for OpenColorIO (OCIO).

Support for the open standard for color management makes it easier to use Photoshop for texturing or post work in movie production pipelines.

The implementation also provides native support for the ACES color management system.

In addition, Photoshop 26.0 expands support for HDR images, making it possible to use a wider set of tools on 32-bit HDR images.

You can find a list of the tools now supported – which includes Dodge, Burn, the healing brushes, the Content Aware Move Tool, and new Adjustment Layer types – in this blog post.

Other changes
Other changes in Photoshop 26.0 include support for Variable fonts in the Font browser.

Photoshop on the web: new AI-based object selection system
Photoshop on the web, the browser-based edition of the software, available as part of Creative Cloud Photoshop subscriptions, has also been updated.

The update adds some of the new features from the desktop edition, including the distraction removal option in the Remove tool, and the Generate Similar feature.

In addition, it introduces a new AI-based object selection system, with Photoshop automatically identifying key elements in an image for selection.

Unlike in previous major annual Photoshop releases, there are no updates this time around to Photoshop on iPad, the tablet edition of the software.

Pricing and system requirements
Photoshop 26.0 is available for Windows 10+ and macOS 12.0+. In the online documentation, it is also referred to as the October 2024 release or Photoshop 2025.

The software is rental-only, with Photography subscription plans, which include access to Photoshop and Lightroom, starting at $119.88/year. Single-app Photoshop subscriptions cost $34.49/month or $263.88/year.
