Mikrotik RouterOS 7.17 / VMware

RouterOS – this is the name of the network operating system from the Latvian manufacturer MikroTik, which, as far as I understand, is based on Linux. The system is used on the company’s own hardware, but is also available as a separate version for your own servers or virtual machines.

The range of functions is quite extensive – in addition to routing and firewall, DHCP, DNS, proxies, file sharing, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VPN, Layer7 filtering, WLAN controller and many other features that provide relevant knowledge.

It is configured both through the command line, web interface, and through a separate graphical administration interface called WinBox. RouterOS is offered free of charge in several licensing levels, which, as far as I know, differ only in the number of simultaneous connections to a VPN server, for example, but not a set of functions themselves.

The variety of functions gives an idea that, despite the graphic configuration, all this business is not intended for home users, but is focused on experienced users who know their business.
